Effect of Jagex's New Account System on OSRS Gold

Jagex now has a new way to minimize the risk of account being stolen or phishing which can enrich bots.

Finally, the latest Jagex account system that was promised 3 years ago is also released with increased security which is definitely better than before. With this update, of course, we want new features such as: pets, OSRS gold and of course the most important thing is security updates.

We must be worried if one day our account gets hacked and not only lose it but also our bank account. Of course this is terrible considering how much time we’ve spent doing it.

However, Jagex has been working on this security update for years and it looks like it’s going to be a while longer until it’s finally ready for release. But will this have an impact on bots and our ability to buy OSRS gold?

Jagex New Account System Schedule

Mod Ayiza confirmed on Reddit that the security update is slated for a 2022 release, but there has been no official announcement of a release date yet. However, if you look at the history of the OSRS update, it will most likely take longer than scheduled.

This news is relevant to Jagex which previously announced a price increase for membership packages after releasing an update about this new account system. If you buy a membership to get OSRS gold, of course it will have an impact with this price increase. Both have consequences for those who want to buy OSRS gold which triggers price increases, even on the black market.

What’s New in This Account System?

If you want to play OSRS on PC, you will be safer because you can go through the Steam client, the new beta client, or use a third-party client like Runelite. You can also use any third party client you want (at your own risk, of course) as long as the client does not have features that will give you unfair advantages.

Runelite appears to be the only third-party client that Jagex plans to integrate into its release. This is because many have trusted and liked this client.

Additionally, there will be a link to download Runelite in the Jagex launcher and finally “full RuneLite integration and installation.” The new Jagex client will allow us to choose from the enhanced RuneScape or RuneLite client.

What are OSRS Third Party Client Security Risks?

The new account system will be Jagex’s way of minimizing risk when using third party clients. Security risks pose a huge danger to players who are afraid of having their data leaked by irresponsible third-party clients.

In addition to the risk of leaks, having multiple clients for OSRS also increases the risk of getting phishing. This is because players may not know they could be tricked into entering their credentials into one of these third-party clients. So players will lose a lot of gold and the most terrible thing is to lose the account completely.

Suppose you are wondering what happened to all the leaked accounts, then the answer is to sell them to bot breeders to start producing OSRS gold. Although Jagex doesn’t explicitly state this, you can infer from their statement about the delivery stages for the new system. You can also check the inclusion of the most trusted and used third party clients that they go to to make it a unique way to access your OSRS accounts/accounts.

Security Aspects Of Jagex’s New Account System

In addition, with the new account you will be able to have more complex passwords and even backup codes for two-factor authentication. Another security feature is that you will get an email notification if someone logs in or wants to change an account.

Jagex also mentions implementing bot protection, but at this point we don’t know what they mean. The live chat feature may not be necessary, but everyone would be very happy if Jagex had it.

Jagex teased fans by saying that they would be “exploring the form of live chat for some support questions.” Ultimately, the new Jagex account will allow you to connect multiple accounts under the same credentials.

Will This Be The End For Bots?

In addition to improved bot protection, removing third-party clients and adding official links to download Runelite will minimize the risk of account leaks or phishing.

Obviously this will have an impact on bot farm owners as it will slightly reduce the number of accounts they can get previously created for their bot farm, and may even be forced to buy OSRS gold with a new account.

However, we also hope that these precautions can work. But even so we also can’t close our eyes if this update later can’t stop the bot farm completely.

At least the update will be a hassle for them because they have to create an OSRS account at a higher cost. This also has an impact on the price of OSRS gold on the black market. Jagex seems to be anticipating this as they have decided to raise prices.
