Mod support is coming for Age of Empires IV, but according to the product page on Steam, it won’t be available until “early 2022”.

Age of Empires 4 Campaign

Age of Empires 4 will have four campaigns, consisting of a total of 35 missions. The four confirmed campaigns are:

  • Norman Conquest (English civ)
  • 100 Years’ War (France civ)
  • Mongolian
  • Moscow Rise (Rus civ)

Instead of focusing on the life of a single historical figure, the Age of Empires IV campaign will span generations, span multiple people, and will present historical context in a more documentary-style format.

According to Adam Isgreen there will be approximately three hours of footage that will complete the campaign missions, mostly using live footage from real-world locations with graphics superimposed in the style of the game, but also other types of video content.

Age of Empires 4 Gameplay Gameplay

The game will feature 3D visuals, with more realistic environments showing clearer altitude, and forests where units can hide for ambush tactics. Maps will also be procedural.

Units will be limited to around 200 per player. In eight-player multiplayer matches, this means you can have a maximum of 1600 units all fighting in the same space.

While the campaign will have hero-like units for narrative reasons, general skirmish gameplay will not feature hero units. The exception for now is the Mongols, who have a unit called the ‘Mongol Khan’ which acts similar to hero units, but is not as powerful.

The Ages have been confirmed to be: Age of Darkness, Age of Feudal, Age of Castle, and Age of Empire. Naval combat has been confirmed, and the Age of Empires 3 ‘aging’ mechanics have been incorporated into the Age of Empires 4 design.
