A game with the theme of a pandemic and a virus raging on Earth and killing thousands of people is nothing new to video games. However, such content becomes very relevant in 2022 when humanity is facing the coronavirus. Although fighting COVID-19 is a difficult task in reality, such a catastrophe is possible to overcome in cyberspace.

Below, you will find a selection of seven pandemic-themed games and dangerous viruses designed for various platforms. The list includes games in which the player can act not only as a fighter against infected monsters but also the creator of a disastrous virus.

1. Plague Inc

Plague Inc is a multi-platform strategy simulation game developed by the British company Ndemic Creations.

While the heroes struggle against the spread of a dangerous epidemic in most of the gameplay, things develop differently in Plague Inc. Players create viruses and control them. The goal is to spread disease, adapt to different conditions, and kill everyone.

Plague Inc which is the game affected by the COVID-19 situation. In light of the coronavirus pandemic and at the request of players, the developers added a new mode to the game, in which players must save the world from a dangerous infection. Vaccine discovery, state shutdown due to quarantine – new modes offer these functions.

In China, the strategy became the best-selling mobile game in January 2022. At that time, local social media wrote that China was trying to overcome the fear of a new disease using the game. But in February, the game disappeared from all app stores. The mass media reported that the reason was the ban on the game in China.

Plague Inc is available for, Android, iOS, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

2. Viral Days

Viral Days is the latest game from indie developer Quizista. This strategy genre game invites players to fight a virus similar to COVID-19 through Android and iOS devices. The gameplay in this game is almost reminiscent of SimCity, which allows you to become the “Master” of their own world in the game.

The virus spreads on Viral Days through the air like the coronavirus and is described as small green bubbles floating around an infected person. As the infected pass by, healthy people lose some of their “hit points”. After a person’s health bar is completely depleted, that person will fall ill and continue to infect others. People who are close enough to each other for the virus to spread are “shrouded” in colors that reflect how critical the situation is.

Your job in the game is to be responsible for maintaining the health of the population. No one dies in this game, but every infection needs a “heart”. If you lose everything in one level, it’s game over.

3. Planet to Save: Infection Battle

Planet to Save: Infection Battle is a mobile game dedicated to saving the planet from viruses. This game was developed in Belarus and released in 2022 when the COVID-19 pandemic was raging in the world.

Players must stop a virus from spreading across the planet with the help of the Planet to Save Corporation.

The stages of the game have references to events that occurred due to the coronavirus pandemic. For example, players must protect cruise ship passengers from infection, prevent the spread of the virus in nightclubs, find infected passengers on planes based on photos and isolate them.

Planet to Save: Infection Battle is currently only available for Android.

4. Bloodborne

This action RPG game was developed by Japanese company FromSoftware and SCE Japan Studio. Bloodborne stands out for its high level of complexity and a small number of tips from the developer.

The action begins in the city of Yharnam which is battling a plague epidemic. Under the influence of the disease, the citizens turned into monsters. The main hero, who turns into a Hunter after a blood transfusion ritual, must move around the city and eliminate different monsters. While exploring the city, players gradually discover dark secrets and the origin of the plague.

This game is only available for PlayStation 4. Currently, a PC version is under development. Insiders report that a new version could be released in 2022.

5. Left 4 Dead

Left4Dead is a multiplayer first-person shooter and survival horror game developed by Turtle Rock Studios.

According to the plot, the epidemic virus outbreak in the United States, causing rabies symptoms and mutations. An unknown infection turns people into monsters. The main character has to fight against the beasts to survive.

Left 4 Dead is a team game, so co-op is the main mode. Teams can consist of one to four people. Lost players are replaced with bots. In multiplayer mode, rival teams find themselves in different conditions, some playing for the survivors, and others – for infected and strongly mutated characters.

Left4Dead is available for PC and Xbox 360.

6. The Last of Us

The Last of Us is an action-adventure game with survival horror and stealth elements developed by the American company Naughty Dog.

In The Last of Us, the pandemic is not caused by a virus, but by a mutated Cordyceps fungus, which becomes parasitic to certain insect species in real life. After entering the human body, it turns people into something that looks like a zombie. The action takes place 20 years after the pandemic disaster. Players need to protect themselves from enemies, reach the safe zone, and save their lives.

In The Last of Us, players not only fight against mutants but also explore the environment and solve various brain teasers.

This game is only available for PlayStation 3. The Last of Us Remastered is designed for PlayStation 4.

7. A Plague Tale Innocence

The last game on the list is A Plague Tale: Innocence which is a stealth-action adventure genre game with horror elements developed by French company Asobo Studio.

Events took place in France in 1348-1349, when the country was suffering from war and plague. The main characters are a 15 year old girl and her younger brother who lost their parents in the middle of an epidemic. They needed to hide from the Inquisition soldiers and looters, as well as to defeat the rats that spread diseases that couldn’t be cured with the help of fire.

The developers managed to make the suffering of people found in the midst of the spread of a deadly disease quite realistic. In addition, they managed to combine an interesting storyline and interesting gameplay. Despite the fact that the main characters are children, the game includes scenes of blood and other horrors of war.
