Understanding IP Address

What is IP Address? IP Address is a unique address in the form of a series of numbers that identify each computer on the internet network. In everyday life, this IP Address functions like a home address. When sending packages or letters, we always include the address of the destination and the sender so that the package can reach its destination. Without a destination address, it is certain that the package will not reach the destination because it does not know where to send the package. The IP address that is widely used today is the IP version 4 address which has a length of 32 bits.

IP Address Function
The function of the IP address is to uniquely identify each computer on the network so that it knows the sender and recipient of each data sent or received. With this uniqueness, there should be no wrong sending of data on the network.

IPv4
IP version 4 has a length of 32 bits and is divided into 4 octets, where each octet is 8 bits in wxyz format. Each variable has a value of 0-255 and there are certain numbers or values that are excluded or cannot be used. In the future, this Version 4 IP address may be replaced with a Version 6 IP address because IPv4 has a limited number of hosts of only about 4 billion for the whole world, while IPv6 can address 4 Trillion addresses which means 1000 times more than IPv4. An example of an IPv4 Address is 192.168.0.1 which is usually the Router IP.

IPv6
IP version 6 has a length of 128 bits and is divided into 8 groups where each group consists of 4 hexadecimal digits and is separated by a colon. An example of IPv6 is 2001:1ab8:0000:0000:0000:0000:0349:5441
